I really really miss Hawaii and spending time outside with this guy. ☀️🏔
It’s easy to dismiss ourselves and our impact on people, places and things. “I’m just one person” is a toxic and limiting mentality that stops you from experiencing more. I truly believe in every single person on this earth and the positive impact that is capable. I believe that sharing experiences through storytelling & art will always be the most important way of enacting positive change. I won’t stop sharing my love and admiration for this planet and how lucky I am to experience its beauty. I won’t stop sharing how our consumer habits can be better and we can do better by Mother Nature. We hold the power to make our future brighter through the choices that we make. Whether that’s through voting or through who we give our money to... we never know when our choices may inspire another and another and another. There is the potential for a chain reaction of GOOD every day we are on this Earth. 🌏
Today is Christmas and @mjmccy and I were scheduled to kayak the Wailua River but our tour was canceled due to powerful storms last night causing the river to flood. So we instead went to a beach down the road from where we are staying. I was shocked at what I saw. Plastic for miles. 🥤 I said to myself I am only one person but that won’t stop me from doing my part and began to clean. Marty found a bin for us to use for the time being and we went to work. Families walked past staring and murmuring to themselves as they saw us slowly make our way down the beach. While I hoped folks would join us in helping, none did. After almost an hour, we were approached by a local woman who was stunned at our efforts. “Usually tourists complain when they see what’s happened here. They’ll say they paid good money to fly here and can’t understand why the beach isn’t in pristine condition. Then they leave instead of helping us.” She explained to us that the plastic came from a trash island in the ocean and wood in the water had come down from the mountains via the river and it was important to get it out before it sank to the bottom. Once it sinks it begins to decay and release methane which kills the marine life. All of this debris, plastic and wood, came to the beach overnight. So, we went to work. 🌴 Before we started the swimming area was covered in wood - no water to be seen. After 2 hours we could see our progress with the water slowly clearing up as we took more and more out. Thankfully, 4 others offered to help as Marty and I were beginning to burn out after almost 3 hours of work. I share all this not to depress you but to ignite you to action. Whether it’s picking up trash in a parking lot, buying and using a reusable water bottle, keeping metal cutlery in your car or purse instead of using plastic, or just sharing this post with friends and family. We all can make an impact and inspire others to do and be better. We are in charge of this Earth and we are responsible for it. 🌏 I did not personally put that plastic into the ocean but who put it there DOESN’T matter when I can do something about it RIGHT NOW. ‼️
Keeping nature wild isn’t just about picking up trash, it’s also about leaving as minimal of an impact as possible when we visit these places — that includes leaving your 🖌🖍🖊 at home. The purpose of spending time outside isn’t to own it, claim it, mark it, or exploit it... it’s about appreciating its beauty, protecting it, loving it, and advocating for its growth. When you spend time outside do take pictures, do soak in the majesty, do share your experiences but do it in a way that allows generations to experience its purity, too. 📍on Patwin land #keepnaturewild #wildkeepers #impactday
Did you know that November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month? Most of you know that senior animals have a special spot in my heart. I have been so lucky to be the fur mom and foster mom to 6 senior kitties - the most recent being Fella. Fella was left behind when his mom went into hospice care. He was discovered by a neighbor hiding in a closet, matted, alone, and a bag of bones - it had been days since he’d eaten. She pleaded asking someone to take him in as a family member was going to “put him out to pasture” - LITERALLY let him go outside to fend for himself. Did I also mention he was 18 at the time and DECLAWED? I couldn’t let that happen so I immediately got in my car and picked him up. I called @mjmccy while on my way there and told him what I was doing and he supported me 1,000% no questions asked - one of the many reasons why I married him. That was almost 2 YEARS ago - that’s right, Fella is still enjoying the good life at almost 20 years old! While he isn’t as spry and quick moving as he probably was in his younger years, the love and appreciation that radiates from his bright blue eyes makes the choice to save a senior so worth it. Adopting, fostering, sponsoring, or volunteering is LIFE-CHANGING for animals waiting for their fur-ever homes. I hope the next time you’re inspired and able, you consider helping a senior pet. 🐾 ❤️
Right now @mjmccy is in New York gearing up for tomorrow’s @nycmarathon. He is running for @teamforkids thanks to @xqamerica. Marathon training is NOT easy and is incredibly time consuming. Tack on a 2 hour commute EACH WAY during the work week + long work days + traveling + volunteering on weekends + socializing feral kittens + making time for friends and family... it is amazing how much Marty does on a regular basis. He could have dropped so many other commitments and responsibilities after signing up but he didn’t. I wish I could run with him (and maybe one day with a new knee I can!) but this public declaration of admiration will have to do. I am so proud of you Marty and all that you do for me, the animals, your family, friends, coworkers... you are a superhero 🦸‍♂️
