The Grammy awards were last night, in case anyone didn’t realize that from all the tweets and Facebook posts about the various performances and wins of the night.
I used to be one of those people who watched award shows until the evolution of YouTube and Hulu came along. Now, instead of watching the pre-award shows and the award show and the after-party clips, I just wait until the next day or even just a few hours, hop on Perez Hilton’s website or YouTube and watching the clips of the night.
Why do I do this? It saves me so much time and I can go work out or sleep without worrying that I am going to miss something because I have faith in my fellow internet geeks to follow through with impeccable coverage.
It surprised me a bit when I read this afternoon that the 2011 Grammy awards was the highest broadcasted Grammy’s since 2001. Considering that many award shows have lost viewers in recent years, this was unexpected. Granted, from what I’ve seen from the Grammy’s there were awesome performances by many different artists but at the same time, why were people drawn to watch it on the TV, rather than just see it later?
Are we still glued to the boob-tube despite the presence of the Internet? I mean, there isn’t anything that will happen on TV that won’t be shown later on the Internet—wardrobe malfunctions or obscene gestures/words are even possible with all the restrictions there are nowadays. So what is it that drew so many people to watch the Grammys?
Is it because by watching it on the TV, the view could pretend that it was more “live” than if they were to watch it later on YouTube or Hulu? Is it because there is still that lingering possibility that something can happen any second? Or is it because people just really wanted to watch something entertaining and ignore the hardships of life and the world that have been recently frequenting the Internet and news?
Whatever it is, I don’t regret not watching the Grammys live, because if something that awesome was happening, I would know about it in seconds thanks to Twitter and Facebook feeds.
